Master Labs

Since the summer semester of 2019, the University of Freiburg has been promoting excellent teaching and curriculum development in master's degree programmes with funds from the university allowance.

As part of a Master Lab, master's students interested in research can pursue a research project within the context of a research consortium (e.g., Cluster of Excellence, research training group, or international research training group). They receive support from experienced researchers and attend additional courses that provide content and methodological guidance for the project.

Participating in a Master Lab helps students become familiar with research contexts during their studies and allows them to carry out an initial independent project in an exciting environment, which may eventually lead to a thesis. For the research consortia, Master Labs offer the opportunity to recruit talented young researchers early on and facilitate the better integration of research and teaching.

The Department of Innovation and Quality in Teaching ensures the Master Labs are well networked and offers students additional interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary courses (e.g., reflections on theory and ethics of science, workshops on various methods of empirical research, good scientific practice). The diverse offerings connect students from different Master Labs and provide them with an opportunity to discuss their experiences in an interdisciplinary environment. The Master Labs project also has an international focus and is carried out in conjunction with the "STREAM" (STudent REseArch Mobility) project of the League of European Research Universities (LERU).

Master Labs make an important contribution to the qualification of young researchers and can be a first step towards a career in science and research for students.

Applications for the funding period 2024-2025 are now open again. The deadline for applications is 15 November 2023. The call for proposals is available here [in German].

New: As of 1 October 2023, funding is also available through the Master Lab Tandems project for individual student research projects that are not conducted as part of a research network. The call for proposals for Master Lab Tandems is available here [in German].

The following projects are currently being funded within the framework of the Master Labs:

  • Master Lab “MoTer” - Modern Technologies in enzyme research (Prof. Dr. Thorsten Friedrich, Institute of Biochemistry – in cooperation with the DFG Research Training Group 2202 “Transport across and into membranes” and with the doctoral research group DFDK 0407 “Enzyme reactivities and their applications” funded by the Franco-German University), (since summer semester 2020).
More information on the MoTer Master Lab can be found here [in German].
