Creating spaces for continued development in teaching
Projects must have innovative potential and be submitted by professors with sound teaching experience who are employed by the University of Freiburg.
The focus is on supporting projects with the following objectives:
- Furthering the didactic and structural development of existing study programmes
- Making sustainable and targeted improvements to the culture of quality in studying and teaching
- Furthering the development of measures to reduce dropout rates
- Optimizing existing processes to increase effectiveness and efficiency in studying and teaching
- Developing offers for specific student groups
The winning projects have access to up to 18 months of flexible funding in the amount of €70,000 as “risk capital” to ensure that they have the time and financial resources needed to implement the instructional development project.

In October 2009, the IDA received initial funding through the “Exzellente Lehre" (Excellent Teaching) competition organised by the Stifterverband and the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK). Since then, it has been financed by a variety of sources (currently the QPL II/BMBF; “Fonds Erfolgreich Studieren in Baden-Württemberg”).
